Pind Daan in Gaya Ji ritual

Vishnupad Temple is the most sacred and central shrine of Gaya Ji, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple derives its name from the divine footprint of Lord Vishnu (Vishnu-paad) that is enshrined in a basalt rock inside the sanctum. According to Hindu belief, Lord Vishnu placed his foot on the demon Gayasura, pressing him down to grant liberation (moksha) to souls. From that time, Gaya Ji became the holiest place for Pind Daan and Shraddh rituals.

Importance of Vishnupad Temple

  • The footprint of Lord Vishnu is the only one of its kind in the world.

  • Performing Pind Daan here ensures eternal peace and salvation for ancestors.

  • The temple is the main center of Pitrupaksha rituals and visited by lakhs of devotees each year.

  • Devotees believe offering prayers here fulfills their duty towards forefathers (Pitru Rina).

Architecture

The temple is built of grey granite stone with intricate carvings and a towering shikhara. The sanctum houses the sacred footprint, which is about 40 cm in length, symbolizing Lord Vishnu’s divine presence. Several smaller shrines of other deities also surround the main temple.

Rituals Performed

  • Pind Daan / Shraddh at Vishnupad is considered the most powerful way to grant moksha to departed souls.

  • Tarpan rituals are performed on the banks of the Falgu River, close to the temple.

  • Devotees also worship Lord Vishnu here for protection, prosperity, and blessings for future generations.

Why Pilgrims Visit

Every Hindu aspires to perform Pind Daan at Vishnupad Temple at least once in their lifetime. The temple is not just a place of worship but a gateway to liberation, where the bond between the living and their ancestors is honored with devotion.
