Why is Pind Daan Performed Only at Gaya Ji? The Story of Gayasur & Vayu Purana
According to the ancient Vayu Purana and Garuda Purana, Gaya Ji is revered as the supreme destination across the cosmic universe for ancestral salvation (Pitru Mukti). The sanctity of this holy land stems from the extraordinary penance of demon king Gayasur.
The Sacred Penance of Gayasur
Gayasur performed rigorous austerities for thousands of years. Pleased by his intense devotion, Lord Vishnu granted him a unique boon: Gayasur's body became so pure that anyone who merely touched or looked upon him was instantly cleansed of all sins and attained liberation (Vaikuntha).
Seeing the cosmic order disrupted as heaven filled up without karmic reckoning, Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva, and Lord Vishnu approached Gayasur and requested his body to perform a great cosmic Yajna. Gayasur willingly offered his colossal form, which stretched across the sacred hills of modern Gaya.
The Dharmasila and Lord Vishnu's Footprint
To stabilize the vibrating earth during the sacrifice, Lord Vishnu placed His lotus right foot upon a sacred stone placed on Gayasur's chest. This divine event manifested the sacred 40-centimeter footprint (Charan Chihna) embedded in basalt rock, which is worshipped today inside the sanctum sanctorum of Vishnupad Temple.
In recognition of his supreme surrender, Lord Vishnu bestowed the eternal boon:
“"Whoever offers Pind Daan, Shradh, and Tarpan upon this holy ground (Gaya Kshetra) shall permanently release 101 ancestral generations (Pitrus) from the cycles of suffering and grant them eternal peace in the celestial realms."
The Irreversible Power of Gaya Shradh
Unlike annual Shradh performed at home, Gaya Pind Daan is regarded as 'Akshay' (everlasting). Once a devotee performs the sacred rites under hereditary Teerth Pandas at Vishnupad Temple, Falgu River, and Akshayavat, their ancestors achieve full salvation, and the living descendants are liberated from Pitru Dosha.
